Hypothermia Shelter 2024

AUUC Hypothermia Shelter, Jan. 21 – 28, 2024

AUUC will be hosting our 13th annual hypothermia shelter and everyone is invited to participate.

Volunteer  —-  Prepare a meal  —-  Donate winter items

We provide a warm place to sleep, dinner each night at about 6:30PM and a breakfast bag for our guests to take with them.

To make all this happen, we need a set-up crew each evening to ensure the building is ready to receive our guests.  We also need people to prepare meal items to be at AUUC between 5:15 – 5:30PM each day and people to arrange/serve the food and clean the kitchen after the meal.  Shelley B. and Chris S. run our dinner operations.

This is a family friendly event and older children (around 10) are welcome to participate in the shelter any night under parental supervision.  In addition, the Children’s Spiritual Development Committee will provide ways for our younger children to be involved.

Sign-up HERE for volunteer opportunities.  If you need assistance volunteering or would like more information, please contact Ed K.

In addition to food and shelter, we will also provide Winter clothing and personal care items for our guests. To help with planning, we’ve created this sign-up for some of the most popular items. All quantities are minimum goals; feel free to bring more than requested even if the list says “All Slots Filled.”

In addition to items on this list, we welcome sample-sized toiletries (such as those from hotel stays), gently used winter coats, and adult-sized clothing items, like underwear, long underwear, winter hats, scarves, and gloves. We also like to provide a selection of new or gently used books and recent magazines. Please limit your clothing donations to winter-appropriate items and ensure they are clean and ready-to-wear.

Donations should be placed in the labeled bin in the gallery at church so they are not mixed in with other items in the hall closet. (Please do not put items directly into the hall closet.) Our guests always appreciate your generosity!  Please reach out to Jessica Larsen if you have any questions. (See contact link in Signup Genius.)

Our UU principles stress “the inherent worth and dignity of every person” and “the interdependent web of all existence”……together, we will help a lot of people again this year.
